Caterpillar plans to spend $100 million over five years to train its workforce in AI, autonomy, and robotics, its chief technology officer told TechCrunch.

The company is applying AI across connected-machine tools, digital-twin software, enterprise operations, and software development. Its Cat AI Assistant lets field technicians use voice commands to retrieve repair procedures, troubleshoot potential problems, and identify parts before work begins. Caterpillar said it has about 1.6 million connected assets globally and more than 16 petabytes of structured data.
