India aims to design and manufacture semiconductors for vehicles, consumer electronics and power infrastructure within five years, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in an interview.

The second phase of the government semiconductor programme has committed Rs 1.27 lakh crore to expand the domestic ecosystem and attract investment. Vaishnaw cited a display-control module plant planned in Uttar Pradesh and Crystal Matrix's planned LED-display facility as examples. The target remains a future policy objective, while several cited projects are still planned.
