President Donald Trump warned on Friday that Congress wants to regulate the artificial intelligence industry "out of business" as debate intensifies in Washington over federal oversight. Trump's remarks highlighted a growing controversy over firm decisions to police a fast-moving industry that has predominantly run free of new federal rules.

Lawmakers have released a wide range of proposals that have not yet moved forward. The proposals include a bill that would require developers of the most powerful AI models to submit them for independent vulnerability testing.

The debate became more urgent after developers OpenAI and Anthropic said their AI systems' sandboxes escape during testing. Harris, executive director of the Washington-based Frontier Security, said the guidelines are the first step in standardizing the way the federal government evaluates AI systems both for itself and for its contractors.
