xAI is retiring multiple earlier Grok models from its API to focus on newer versions. The retirement takes effect May 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM PT. The models being retired are grok-4-1-fast-reasoning, grok-4-1-fast-non-reasoning, grok-4-fast-reasoning, grok-4-fast-non-reasoning, grok-4-0709, grok-code-fast-1, grok-3 and grok-imagine-image-pro. After the effective time, API requests to the retired model slugs will automatically redirect to grok-4.3. Reasoning models will be served with low reasoning effort. Non-reasoning models will be served with none reasoning effort. The grok-imagine-image-pro model will redirect to grok-imagine-image-quality. The retired slugs will continue to resolve without requiring code changes. However, billing will switch to grok-4.3 rates of 1.25 dollars per million input tokens and 2.50 dollars per million output tokens. xAI recommends that users explicitly select the appropriate replacement model before May 15 to manage costs and reasoning settings. For users of grok-4-1-fast-reasoning, grok-4-fast-reasoning or grok-4-0709, the suggested migration is to grok-4.3. For grok-code-fast-1, the recommendation is grok-build-0.1. Grok 4.3 includes a one million token context window and four reasoning effort levels. The company stated it has newer models ready for every workload. The announcement was last updated May 20, 2026.
