Google Search as you know it is over

Google announced an AI powered overhaul of Search at its Google I/O conference on Tuesday. The company described the update as the biggest change to the search box since it debuted more than 25 years ago. The revamped box expands to accommodate longer conversational queries and features an AI powered suggestion system beyond autocomplete. Google Search will at times drop users into AI powered interactive experiences rather than returning a list of links. The company is introducing tools to dispatch information agents that gather information on behalf of users. It is also adding tools that allow users to build personalized mini apps. AI Overviews will allow follow up questions in AI Mode beginning Tuesday. The user interface encourages these questions instead of scrolling to links, though links remain but are no longer the priority for many searches. AI Mode is not the default. Starting this summer users can create and manage multiple information agents in Google Search. The agents operate in the background 24/7 to track web changes and provide alerts to users. Google described an example involving market movement tracking based on specific parameters. Google is integrating agentic capabilities and generative UI into Search using its Gemini and Antigravity platform. Results will feature dynamic layouts and interactive visuals built on the fly, and users will be able to create customizable mini apps in Search with natural language commands. The updates will roll out this summer.
