Future of Life Institute issues statement on White House AI legislative recommendations

The Future of Life Institute issued a statement in response to the White House AI legislative recommendations published on Friday. The recommendations include a call for Congress to preempt states from regulating AI. Michael Kleinman, head of US policy at the institute, released the statement. He said Big Tech and their allies in the administration are desperate to stop states from regulating AI even as it ravages families, eliminates jobs and threatens to replace humans wholesale. Kleinman said huge majorities of Americans, Republican and Democrat alike, demand guardrails on the technology. Instead of listening, he said, David Sacks is working to block states from protecting their own citizens. He said Sacks has tried to block commonsense child safety legislation in conservative states like Utah. Kleinman said any legislative framework that includes federal preemption without meaningful guardrails is not serious about protecting Americans. He said it is just another handout to Big Tech at the expense of kids, communities and jobs. David Sacks can rebrand his Big Tech wish list however he likes, but Americans are not buying it, according to the statement.
