Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is asking a federal judge on Tuesday to temporarily halt the Pentagon's designation of the company as a supply chain risk. The hearing is scheduled in a California federal court.

Anthropic sued earlier this month. The company seeks to stop the Trump administration from enforcing what it describes as an unlawful campaign of retaliation. The retaliation claim follows the company's refusal to allow unrestricted military use of its technology.

The firm is asking U.S. District Judge Rita Lin for an emergency order. The order would temporarily reverse the Pentagon decision. Anthropic also seeks to undo an order from President Donald Trump that directs all federal employees to stop using its Claude chatbot.

Judge Lin presides over the case in federal court in San Francisco. Anthropic is headquartered in the city. The company has filed a separate case in the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C.

Lin sent questions to both sides. The questions address discrepancies between Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's formal directive and his social media posts about it. The directive declares Anthropic a potential threat to national security.
