RentAHuman operates as an online marketplace that lets artificial intelligence agents hire people to perform physical tasks such as deliveries, photography, event attendance and package pickup.

The platform was developed in a day and a half by software engineer Alex Liteplo and co-founder Patricia Tani. It launched on February 1, 2026, and recorded 130 applicants on the first day, followed by 1,000 the next day and 145,000 a day later. It has since logged more than four million visits and approaches 600,000 registered users.

Developers connect AI agents to the platform through a model context protocol server or REST API. The software scans a directory of people by GPS coordinates and hourly rates, then posts bounties or sends direct requests. Workers who complete assignments submit cryptographically timestamped or location-verified photos as proof of presence before receiving payment in cryptocurrency, through Stripe or in platform credits.

Liteplo and Tani said in an interview with Wired that the system treats humans as physical extensions of AI agents. Liteplo stated that humans remain necessary because artificial intelligence cannot perform certain real-world actions. Tani said people would prefer an algorithm as a boss because it avoids personal conflicts.

Some critics have described the service as a marketing effort rather than a stable employment option. Early users have also reported difficulty securing assignments on the platform.
