Google closed its $32 billion acquisition of cybersecurity company Wiz this week. The transaction stands as the largest in Google's history and the biggest acquisition of a venture-backed startup to date.

Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah, whose firm was Wiz's largest shareholder, discussed the deal on TechCrunch's Equity podcast. Shah previously backed Adallom, the earlier startup founded by Wiz co-founders Assaf Rappaport, Ami Luttwak and Roy Reznik.

Shah said Wiz sits at the center of three tailwinds in AI, cloud and security spending. These areas have become central in the AI era because every workload now requires security, he noted.

The investor credited the founding team's dynamics for building a culture of trust that enabled rapid platform development. Assaf makes high-quality judgment calls, while co-founders Ami and Yinon Costica offer contrasting perspectives and Roy focuses on execution, Shah said.

Wiz secures cloud infrastructure and code in production for customers who know how to prioritize risks, Shah explained. Google's infrastructure and AI talent will help extend those efforts while preserving the company's internal culture, he added.

Shah said the outcome will change lives for many people involved and provide new inspiration for entrepreneurs around the world.
