Creator economy faces flood of AI-generated slop threatening viability
Image: Primary The hosts of TechCrunch's Equity podcast discussed how generative AI video tools could affect the creator economy. Rebecca Bellan said that a lot of people are going to be using these tools to produce all kinds of content. She added that the result would be an absolute flood that would be intense.
Bellan highlighted a tension between two outcomes from wider use of the tools. One outcome is the production of a whole lot of low-effort slop. The other is that the tools could democratize access for people who do not have funds or budgets or teams to share their stories.
She said small businesses could use the tools to create ads for products such as shampoo or coffee. Bellan questioned whether more content is needed in the world.
Anthony said the response to slop would be greater valuing of authenticity among audiences. Established creators could position themselves as the real person rather than a digital simulacra. He noted that OpenAI's Sora had skyrocketed at the beginning but has been struggling to hold on to users more recently.
Anthony attributed the struggle to a certain emptiness in the experience. Users feel there is not an authentic human being on the other side. He said this development would make the situation much more challenging for established creators to monetize.
New creators would face particular difficulty. There would be so much more stuff that trying to break out would become super difficult, according to Anthony.
