U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright urged grid operators to be prepared to make backup generation resources at data centers and other major facilities available as needed. The statement came as much of America prepares for a major winter storm.

Wright cited a draft order under section 202C of the Federal Power Act. The order would require private backup generation to be made available only after demand response is exhausted and as a last resort prior to a Reliability Coordinator declaring an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3.

Wright said the Department of Energy has identified more than 35 GW of unused backup generation that can support grid stability in a crisis.

Compass Datacenters said it supports the decision. The company said it is positioned to island its facilities by removing its load entirely from the grid during these peak weather conditions to help stabilize the wider energy network. Ultimately this action helps prevent rolling blackouts and saves lives when the community needs power most, the company said.
