A peer-reviewed IEEE study reanalyzed 12 years of Backblaze data covering 443,156 enterprise hard drives and more than 1.66 million drive-years through the second quarter of 2025. After matching drives by age, capacity, form factor and temperature, the study found HGST drives failed at about 41% of Seagate's rate and WD at about 52%, while Toshiba was at 107%. The source says Toshiba's monthly failure rate rose sharply after 60 months, and each additional degree Celsius was associated with a 2.1% higher failure rate.
