MIT researchers designed a qubit architecture with separate data-storage and interaction components connected by a quarton coupler. In simulations, the design produced state-of-the-art coherence time alongside faster operations and readout than other superconducting-qubit architectures, according to the researchers. They say the division of functions reduces unwanted mixing while preserving strong nonlinear coupling, which could support quantum error correction. The work appears in Physical Review Applied.
