Volkswagen has begun Level 3 road tests in Hefei, while Xpeng has received approval for Level 4 robotaxi demonstration operations across Guangzhou, The Next Web reported. Both companies announced their approvals on Monday.

Volkswagen says its licence allows testing and data collection in real traffic as it targets technology readiness in 2027. Xpeng's Yoyo service will initially admit riders through invitation codes, with coverage expanding in stages.

Xpeng plans to supply its technology rather than operate large fleets itself and says it is discussing partnerships with European ride-hailing platforms. Its target for carrying passengers without safety drivers is 2027.
