Ai2 announced a climate modeling initiative backed by multimillion-dollar, three-year funding from Google.org and technical support from Google Research. The funding will expand its team to develop NeuralGCM+, an open-source model intended for climate projections over years to decades.

The project will extend NeuralGCM by connecting atmospheric simulation with ocean and sea-ice models. Ai2 also plans documented tools for outside researchers and improved GPU performance. NeuralGCM combines physical equations with AI for smaller processes such as cloud formation; demonstrating reliable projections of future climates remains a central research task.
