Dutch municipalities test government software platform built on NixOS

Eight Dutch municipalities are running trials of a government software platform built around NixOS, Tom's Hardware reports. The project, overseen by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, is intended to reduce reliance on US software and services after sanctions against the International Criminal Court cut off its chief prosecutor's access to Microsoft services, including email. Three government IT providers are working on the platform, which is meant to cover operating systems, office software and cloud services. NixOS installs software packages separately so configurations can be reproduced across machines. The first stable version is expected by the end of 2027; the current deployments are trials.
