Super Micro Co-Founder Pleads Not Guilty to Smuggling Nvidia Servers to China

Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw, co-founder of Super Micro Computer, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Manhattan federal court to charges that he helped illegally divert billions of dollars in Nvidia-powered servers to China, Bloomberg reported. Liaw is accused of participating in a scheme to circumvent U.S. export controls that restrict the sale of advanced semiconductor technology to Chinese entities. Nvidia's high-performance GPUs, which are central to AI training and inference workloads, are among the most tightly controlled U.S. technology exports under restrictions that have tightened significantly since 2022. Super Micro Computer, also known as Supermicro, is one of the world's largest server manufacturers and a key supplier of AI infrastructure to data centers globally. The company has faced regulatory scrutiny in recent years, including a delayed annual filing in 2024 that led to a temporary Nasdaq delisting notice before it came back into compliance. The charges against Liaw represent a significant escalation in U.S. enforcement of semiconductor export controls. The Justice Department and Commerce Department have pursued multiple cases in recent years alleging that American technology has been smuggled to Chinese military-linked entities through third-country intermediaries and front companies. The case will be watched closely by the semiconductor and AI infrastructure industries, where U.S.-China technology export restrictions have become a central operational and compliance concern. A conviction could lead to broader scrutiny of supply chains and business relationships involving Chinese customers. Liaw's attorney did not immediately comment. Bloomberg reported the not guilty plea on April 1, 2026.
