European aviation regulator approves AeroSHARK film for Airbus A330-300
Image: Primary Lufthansa Technik has received European Union Aviation Safety Agency approval to install its AeroSHARK surface film on an Airbus A330-300 operated by Discover Airlines. The approval extends the aircraft types on which the drag-reducing technology can be used.
The polymer film has microscopic grooves modeled on shark skin that aim to reduce friction as air passes over the aircraft. Lufthansa has already used it on 22 Boeing 777 aircraft. The company claims the film cuts fuel use and emissions by one percent per flight, rising to up to 2% when applied to the wings and tail surfaces as well.
