Databricks is offering private-preview access to REGISTER and UNREGISTER in Unity Catalog, which it says let customers transfer management of existing Apache Iceberg tables between catalogs without copying their data files. Customers must contact their account team for access.

The operations work together to bring tables under Unity Catalog's management or release them for registration elsewhere. The files remain in customer-owned cloud storage while the catalog handles maintenance and optimization. Databricks says this portability depends on customers owning the storage; provider-controlled storage cannot offer the same handoff.
