Discord is moving its desktop app to Rust, and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy shared an image showing a Windows client using 290MB of RAM. The Verge reported that the current Windows app can use 1GB or more when users participate in a few servers.

The rewrite would remove Electron and React Native. Mobile apps would retain native interfaces while sharing application code with desktop through Rust. Vishnevskiy said Discord hopes to begin user testing soon; the timing of the full switch remains unclear.
