Salon announced that it is ceasing publication after 31 years, saying its publishing model is no longer sustainable. The digital publication launched in November 1995 and built its coverage around politics, culture, criticism and ideas.

In its farewell statement, Salon attributed the decision to changes in the business realities of independent digital journalism. It thanked the journalists, contributors, designers, business staff and readers who sustained the publication across its history.
