The California legislature passed Assembly Bill 1709, which the Electronic Frontier Foundation says would restrict social-media services from offering recommendation algorithms and certain user inputs, including follows and likes, to people under 16. EFF said the law would take effect in January if enacted. The group also said the measure could require invasive age-verification methods and conflict with existing California laws; Governor Gavin Newsom has not yet acted on the bill.
