Researchers from Harvard University and the University of Tokyo reported an algorithm that incrementally designs expandable 3D lattices from rods and scissored joints. In a recent Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper, the team said it used the method to computationally design and physically assemble examples including helices, toroids and eggboxes with multi-material 3D printers. The work demonstrates a design method for collapsible structures, rather than a deployed product or a measured cost, durability or performance advantage.
