An international research team created a three-component Hubbard system with tunable interactions and imaged individual atoms, according to a study published in Science. The laboratory system uses ultracold atoms on a lattice to investigate how interacting particles behave.

The researchers observed a Mott insulator, in which strong interactions prevent particles from moving freely between sites. They also measured competing magnetic correlations and developed a method to count sites occupied by three atoms, with results matching numerical calculations. Studying lattice models of quantum chromodynamics remains a planned extension of the experiment.
