OpenAI Asks California and Delaware to Investigate Musk for Anti-Competitive Conduct
OpenAI has asked the attorneys general of California and Delaware to investigate Elon Musk for what it describes as improper and anti-competitive behavior.
In a letter sent Monday, the artificial intelligence company urged state regulators to examine Musk's efforts to block OpenAI from restructuring as a for-profit entity. The request comes ahead of a trial scheduled for April involving Musk's legal challenge to the company's corporate conversion.
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left its board in 2018, has been engaged in a prolonged legal and public relations battle against the company. He has criticized OpenAI's shift from its original non-profit mission and has attempted to acquire the organization through his own AI venture, xAI.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between major AI stakeholders as the industry consolidates around for-profit models requiring massive capital investment. OpenAI's restructuring would allow it to attract additional funding beyond the constraints of its original non-profit charter.
Representatives for Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The California and Delaware attorneys general offices have not publicly responded to OpenAI's request.
