Residents of League City, Texas, voted this week against their police department's continued use of Flock Safety license plate readers, and the cameras are set to be removed, TechCrunch reported. At least 10 local governments and police departments have moved since summer to curb, restrict or end their use of Flock technology amid privacy, data-sharing and procurement concerns.

Flock sells surveillance tools including license plate readers, with more than 100,000 cameras in use nationwide. The company says customers own their data and control sharing, and argues that removing its tools harms public safety. Some cities are restricting access rather than ending service: Cleveland extended its contract but limited database access to its police department and restricted immigration-related searches.
