Books by People says it has received UK Intellectual Property Office approval to distribute a cover mark certifying human-authored books, WIRED reported. Five publishers have signed up, and the startup expects the first marked book by the end of the year.

Certification combines an authorship declaration, proprietary software and manual examination of early drafts and research materials. Publishers will pay a flat membership fee and an additional charge for each book submitted.

The approved verification process places greater weight on documents and communication trails than on automated detection. Books by People says it favors the author when evidence of AI use is uncertain; industry figures warn that false positives could damage writers' reputations.
