# New Jersey fines data center operator $1.1 million over gas generators

New Jersey ordered DataOne, the operator of a planned data center, to pay a $1.1 million fine for installing and operating gas generators without required permits. The state acted after an investigation found that 45 of the site's 62 generators were operating. The generators had capacities of 1,982 kilowatts each, while permits are required at 37 kilowatts or higher.

DataOne has 45 days to apply for permits or cease operating the generators, but may keep them running while seeking permits. A company spokesperson said DataOne disagrees with the fine and will apply for the permits. The enforcement action puts a compliance deadline on the site's power supply.
