Austrian academy plans free Apollo model for restoring Ancient Greek texts

The Austrian Academy of Sciences plans to release Apollo on Wednesday, giving academics free access to a language model trained on roughly 600 million historical Greek words. Developed with Mistral and Sail Reply, the chatbot is designed to search collections and propose statistically likely text for gaps in damaged papyri, manuscripts and inscriptions. Apollo presents scholars with multiple possible reconstructions rather than altering the historical record automatically. Its developers say specialists must choose among the suggestions, and outside academics caution that the tool is unlikely to uncover major lost works.
