OpenAI has proposed reducing electricity consumption at its data centers during periods of grid strain through its Grid Protectors Program, Network World reported. The proposal would make power flexibility part of data center design, taking future capacity needs into account.

OpenAI says its approach would vary by region. The proposal comes as opposition to growing data center power demand threatens construction delays. The company has yet to finalize all the program's details, leaving the operational arrangements for reducing demand unsettled.
