Sana Biotechnology reported that transplanted pancreatic islet cells continued to survive and function without immunosuppression at 14 months in a patient with type 1 diabetes. The update comes from an investigator-sponsored first-in-human study of UP421, a donor-cell therapy modified to evade immune detection.

Circulating C-peptide measurements, an indicator of cell function, remained comparable to measurements during the study's first six months. Scans at Weeks 12 and 52 identified islet cells at the forearm transplant site. Sana reported no safety issues, and the findings appeared in a peer-reviewed letter in The New England Journal of Medicine. The results concern one patient.
