A research team working with Apex Fusion says it reproduced the central result of MIT's SwarmWorld experiment on four RTX 3090 gaming GPUs using a 4-bit version of the open-weight Qwen3.8-27B model. The experiment tests whether agents sharing a simulated world outperform agents working alone.

The compressed model reached 6 of 16 research milestones alone and all 16 in a society. Nine of 12 paired effects matched MIT's direction; the other three fell within noise. The team used MIT's code and commands unchanged and published its paper and full traces.

The conclusion rests on a single run at one population size. MIT's larger populations have not yet been rerun.
