# Researchers report 100-bit DNA molecular computer

Researchers at Maynooth University reported a scaffolded DNA computer that performed 10 molecular programs, including 100-bit calculations, without electricity. Detailed in Nature on September 16, the system uses DNA origami: a long strand and shorter "staple" strands self-assemble into a computing grid after heating and cooling. Information processing comes from DNA base-pair binding and unbinding, with programmed sequences and chemical reactions producing the final structure. The work remains a laboratory molecular-computing result, not a replacement for deployed silicon systems.
