California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, which prohibits employers from delegating disciplinary and termination decisions entirely to automated systems, ZDNET reports. Employers must corroborate an AI system's output and give employees the reasons for a decision, including the data used.

The law takes effect July 1, 2027. Employers cannot use output that they cannot corroborate or that a human reviewer finds inaccurate, incomplete or misleading. Affected employees can complain to the California Labor Commissioner. The law allows automated systems to inform decisions, while requiring employers to disclose whether an AI system caused a mass layoff, relocation or termination.
