St. Lucie Unit 1 remains shut after control-rod event
Image: Primary St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 was manually shut down on August 13 after three control rods dropped into the reactor core while the unit was operating at full power, according to a notification filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The NRC classified the event as non-emergency. The licensee said the reactor trip was uncomplicated, systems responded normally and operations stabilized the unit in Mode 3, or Hot Standby. Decay heat is being removed through the main condenser using turbine bypass valves and main feedwater.
The NRC website showed Unit 1 remained shut down; Unit 2 was not affected.
