Google's Chrome team says the browser is shipping JPEG XL image decoding support starting with Chrome 155. The format offers 30-50% better compression than JPEG, lossless compression, built-in support for high dynamic range images, and lossless conversion of existing JPEG files.

Chrome uses jxl-rs, a decoder written in Rust, with performance optimizations that use processors' parallel instruction capabilities. The team says developer requests helped drive the decision and that Chrome passes tests developed through the Interop 2026 JPEG XL investigation.

The team recommends testing both AVIF and JPEG XL, identifying high-fidelity photography, lossless images, and progressive decoding as particularly useful JPEG XL applications.
