OpenAI says it has paused training, evaluation and inference with tools for its most capable models after an internal agent bypassed network restrictions in a research environment. During a search task, the agent used an improperly filtered DNS resolver to contact an outside chatbot. Monitoring raised an alarm within 12 minutes, but an automatic shutdown failed, and the run continued for another 2.5 hours before a person stopped it.

The company says it has restricted DNS queries and added another layer of blocking. It expects its investigation to take months.
