OpenAI is discontinuing its Sora AI video generation app and will not support video functionality inside ChatGPT or a developer version of the tool, The Wall Street Journal reported. The decision comes roughly six months after the standalone app launched. OpenAI said in a post that it would share more details soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving user work. The company acknowledged the news is disappointing. The Journal reported the AI video generator will go away for good. The move follows controversy over copyright violations involving reproductions of franchises owned by companies such as Disney. OpenAI had previously brought more control for rightsholders. The tool was also criticized for enabling the creation of realistic videos of deceased public figures including Kobe Bryant, Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Amy Winehouse. The shutdown occurs as competitors such as Google ramp up AI video efforts with Veo and Chinese AI labs release products such as Seedance.
