NEW YORK (Fortune) A humanoid robot named Atlas delivered the match ball at halftime during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Brazil and Norway at New York/New Jersey Stadium. The robot, built by Boston Dynamics and presented by Hyundai Motor Company, walked pitchside, performed goal celebrations in the style of Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Matheus Cunha and Son Heung-min, then turned to the referee and handed over the match ball. Its appearance in front of 80,000 people in the stadium and a global television audience came after a process five years in the making. Hyundai Motor Company, which owns Boston Dynamics, has sponsored FIFA for 27 years. Before Brazil and Norway retook the pitch for their Round of 16 match on Saturday, the five-foot to six-foot fully electric robot made the appearance that had never occurred in FIFA World Cup history. Atlas is described as having 56 points of movement on its body in related reporting tied to the event.
