A report says NATO allies uncovered a Russian training exercise simulating deployment of a secret weapon against undersea cables near Norway's Svalbard archipelago this spring.

Reuters reported Russian submarines were caught training to disable critical undersea cables without leaving fingerprints, with the operation attributed to Russia's GUGI undersea warfare directorate. The discovery was purportedly a joint naval exercise by Britain, Norway and the U.S. The report says the mission was a simulation and no cables were damaged.

Norway operates two 1,400km cables linking Svalbard to the mainland at nearly 3km depth, relaying satellite data.
