# Preprint reports better model alignment by selecting intervention layers for each input

Researchers report that selecting where to intervene inside a language model for each input improves alignment with target behaviors across multiple models. Their preprint introduces Where to Steer, a framework that learns to choose intervention layers from the model's internal representations of an input.

The method adjusts intermediate representations to steer behavior during inference. It outperformed methods using a fixed intervention layer on both inputs resembling the training distribution and inputs outside it. The findings concern behavioral steering rather than a change to model training.
