NASA researchers mapped long-term changes in terrestrial water storage with five to 10 times more spatial detail than previous analyses by combining more than two decades of satellite gravity measurements. The finer resolution revealed previously undetected human impacts and resolved smaller reservoirs and water diversion projects.

The analysis covered April 2002 to November 2025 and identified 40 regions where storage changes aligned with activities including irrigation, reservoir filling and land-use change. It enables better monitoring in remote areas with limited measurement options, but sacrifices temporal detail: the sharper map shows long-term trends rather than preserving the detail of standard monthly maps.
