Beehiiv Expands into Podcasting, Taking Direct Aim at Patreon and Substack
Image: Primary Beehiiv, the newsletter publishing platform, has launched podcasting features that allow creators to distribute audio content alongside written newsletters, positioning itself as an all-in-one creator monetization platform and taking direct aim at rivals Patreon and Substack, TechCrunch reported.
A key differentiator in Beehiiv's approach is its revenue-sharing model: the company does not take a cut of creator revenue, unlike Substack which charges a 10% fee on paid subscriptions and Patreon which takes between 5% and 12% depending on the plan tier. The zero-cut model has been central to Beehiiv's pitch to newsletter creators since the company's founding, and applying the same structure to podcasting extends that competitive angle.
Podcasting has become increasingly important to the creator economy as audiences consume content across both audio and text formats. Substack has moved into podcasting as well, and platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts have built monetization tools for independent creators. Beehiiv's integration of podcasting with an existing newsletter subscriber base gives creators a path to reach their established audiences with new format content without building a separate following.
Beehiiv was founded in 2021 by former Morning Brew executives and has grown rapidly by targeting professional and semi-professional newsletter creators who want more control and better economics than Substack offers. The company has raised venture funding and previously announced subscriber and revenue milestones without disclosing full financial details.
The podcasting expansion broadens Beehiiv's total addressable market and provides an additional vector for creator acquisition at a time when competition for the newsletter publishing market has intensified.
