# Cloudflare frees more than 100 terabytes of memory with routing changes

Cloudflare said it freed more than 100 terabytes of memory across its servers by reducing the space used by an internal service that directs requests to cached files. The service stores routing information so it can find each file without keeping multiple copies in the same data center.

One change packed each routing entry into six bytes instead of eight, cutting memory use for that part of the system by 25%. At Cloudflare's scale, small savings per entry add up across the network.

The company said these savings came on top of a separate 100-terabyte reduction by its DNS team the previous month.
