Cloudflare said it reclaimed more than 100TB of RAM globally by reducing the memory footprint of a Pingora-based internal load-balancing service. The company changed how its Pingora Backend Router stores consistent-hashing points, including packing a hash and index into a six-byte representation rather than an aligned eight-byte structure. Cloudflare said that step reduced memory used for consistent hashing by 25%. It also said the savings came on top of 100TB its DNS team shed the prior month.
