Infineon Technologies has opened a 5 billion euro (US$5.69 billion) facility in Dresden, Germany, the company announced. Deemed the Smart Power Fab, it is the company's largest single investment to date. The new factory doubles manufacturing capacity at Infineon's Dresden site, creating what the company says is the world's largest production facility for power semiconductors and analogue or mixed-signal technologies. It also could create up to 1,000 jobs in what is Europe's largest chip hub. Chief Executive Officer Jochen Hanebeck said the plant is opening at just the right time, creating urgently needed capacities for key technologies of the future, including energy supply for AI data centres, software-defined vehicles and renewable energies. German Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation Karsten Wildberger said the facility secures jobs and creates value in Germany, marking another milestone on the country's path toward digital sovereignty. The project received about 1 billion euros (US$1.145 billion) in subsidies under the EU Chips Act, according to Bloomberg. The European Chips Act has catalysed a total of 69 billion euros (US$80 billion) in public and private investments across Europe, according to market intelligence group Semi.
