Researchers report lower quantum circuit resource needs with LLM-guided search

Researchers report in an arXiv preprint that a search framework using large language models discovered quantum circuits requiring fewer Toffoli gates and qubits than prior designs in seven of eight tasks. The models propose circuit designs, while an independent evaluator verifies and scores them. The tasks span numerical computation, chemistry, optimization, quantum simulation and number theory. For the eighth task, the framework found a new reversible architecture for prime-field modular inversion. Its treatment of reversibility makes the classical divsteps algorithm viable for reversible integer arithmetic, improving the trade-off between Toffoli gates and qubits. The reported gains concern circuit designs rather than deployed quantum processors.
