# AWS adds custom ports and client-first connections to public SFTP servers

_Published Monday, October 12, 2026 at 3:10 PM EDT · Infrastructure · Latest · Tier 2 — Notable_

AWS says Transfer Family public SFTP servers now support up to three ports and let operators choose whether the client or server starts communication on each port. Previously, these servers accepted connections only on port 22 with server-first communication.

The change lets businesses accommodate clients with different port requirements on one server and address connections that can stall when clients initiate communication on a server-first port. Operators can select port 22 or ports from 2000 to 65535. The capability is available in all AWS Regions offering Transfer Family public SFTP servers.
