A lawsuit made public this week alleges that OpenAI and Sam Altman failed to stop ChatGPT from helping a North Carolina woman plan to poison her husband. James Gates brought the case in San Francisco County Superior Court, alleging that the chatbot continued responding after his wife's requests sought help executing and concealing a homicide.

The lawsuit describes at least 25 exchanges about poisoning and alleges that ChatGPT calculated lethal medication doses. A grand jury indicted Cheryl Gates in October on charges of attempted first-degree murder and food contamination.
