Researchers at Rice University, Duke University and Translume have developed a monolithic three-dimensional ion trap that works with heavy ions such as ytterbium. The laboratory device extends a design approach previously limited to light ions such as calcium, combining precise fabrication with features of manually assembled traps.

The team formed channels and electrode trenches in fused silica glass. The trenches prevent electrical shorts during gold coating and electrical breakdown under high voltage in a vacuum. A third-generation design addressed earlier heating and unwanted ion motion problems. Rice and Duke tested the traps and found their behavior agreed with computer simulations.
