Ruby on Rails has fixed a critical Active Storage flaw that could let unauthenticated attackers write arbitrary server files through crafted uploads processed by ImageMagick. Apps using Active Storage's Disk service could also expose files the application can read, including secrets that may enable remote code execution or access to other systems.

The fixes ship in Rails 8.1.4.1 and 8.0.5.2 with an ImageMagick policy that blocks dangerous format handlers. Exposure requires untrusted uploads, ImageMagick processing and a policy that permits the relevant handlers. Attaching a file is enough to trigger processing; creating a preview is unnecessary. Release series older than 8.0 will receive no fixed versions.
